Stunning Ways to Utilise Rugs Throughout Your Home

The Bedroom

In a bedroom the feature and usage is all about the bed... its even in the name! We believe there are three ways that your new rug can be stylish and practical in your bedroom:

Option One, The Feature... Just like any room in your home, we recommend that the main features have enough room for the rug to be placed under, with excess for you to walk on. For a bedroom this would mean that you need enough space for your bed to easily fit on, with excess space for your to walk on around the sides and foot (approx. 2-3 feet).

Option Two, Meeting Halfway... For a smaller bedroom you can get away with placing the rug at the foot of the bed with the excess covering the floor in front. For this option you will want more rug space in front of your bed, as opposed to the sides in option one.

Option Three, Being Economical... Rugs, down to size and material, can become expensive... especially if you are thinking of placing one that covers a king size bed with space around for bedsides and walk space.  However, a very economical option is to place two matching runners on either side of the bed. This will mean that when you get out of bed you still have a soft and warm rug to place your feet on, a stylish feature and, again, a much more affordable way of covering your flooring.

The Dining Room

In a dining room the feature is around the table. However, do not forget that the usage is actually around the seating.

Option One, The Feature... Just like any room in your home, we recommend that the main feature of your room has enough room for the rug to be placed under, with excess for you to walk on. Whilst in a dining room you do not walk around the table, you do sit around it. For a rug in a dining room we would always advise that your rug has around 4 feet of excess from the edge of the table. This means that your guests and family can sit or get up from the table with the ease of not having a chair that gets snagged at the edges of a rug that is too small.

The Hallway

Your hallway is the first and last room visitors will see of your home. For this room you will want a rug doesn't clutter the room and invites people in.

Option One, The Frame... Unlike other rooms in your home, a hallway does not have much of a feature. There may be storage and hanging space for coats and dog leads, but you really need space to move around. The main importance is to select a rug that is durable and will last the pitter-patter of feet and paws. Unlike other rooms, if your hallway has console tables and/or small seating, you will want a rug that sits in front of these items. Positioning your rug like this will mean it acts like a frame and gives the illusion that your entrance seems bigger than it actually is.

You can adapt this rug positioning to other hallways and landings throughout your home.

The Living Room

In a sitting room the feature and usage of the room is usually around the seating area and what is in front of this - be it a television, a radio or a fireplace.

Option One, The Feature... Just like any room in your home, we recommend that the main features have enough room for the rug to be placed under, with excess for you to walk on. As the image conveys, your feature rug should give you plenty of room to place your sofas on, space for a central coffee table and enough excess so the room does not feel cramped.

Option Two, Meeting Halfway... A second option is to place your rug under the front feet of your sofas/chairs with the excess covering the floor in front. Like option one, this still gives you space for a coffee table but ensures that you still have room to comfortably walk around.

Remember, in a sitting room you want a rug that sets boundaries and grounds your furniture comfortably. A rug should define your seating area and works with it.
